Number Investigator Empowers and Protects Consumers from Scams During the Holiday Season

Bellevue, WA (PRWEB) December 22, 2010

With the rise of mobile technology and the declining use of landlines and associated caller ID systems, Number Investigator helps consumers find and share information about the calls they receive.

Telemarketers aren’t the only annoying callers plugging lines around the holidays in an attempt to separate people from their cash. While it’s true that many popular scams have begun to take shape in the online world, there are still some old-fashioned swindlers attempting both cash and identity theft through phone calls and text messages.

In September 2010, the FDIC reported an elaborate scam aimed at home buyers and loan recipients. Potential scam victims received phone calls from individuals posing as FDIC employees attempting to gain personal information such as bank account numbers and debit or credit card numbers. As the holidays approach, there’s no shortage of cons attempting to drive a wedge between unsuspecting victims and their hard-earned cash.

Police departments across the country are warning consumers about several popular scams this holiday season. One, known as the “Help! I’ve Been Robbed!” scam, involves staged phone calls to family and friends of the targeted “victim” indicating that they are a family member and have been robbed and require that money be wired or transferred so they can make it home. Another popular technique used all year long is known as “Smishing” or “text phishing”. Potential victims receive text messages from con artists claiming to be their bank or an online retailer. These texts usually indicate that there has been a problem with the owner’s account and ask that they verify their account information. Individuals tend to be more vulnerable to this scam during the holiday season when they are shopping at a variety of stores both on and offline.

NumberInvestigator.com allows consumers to protect their identities and their cash by searching for and reporting offending con artists. The site has a running list of offending callers and complaints organized by phone number. An individual seeking information about an unknown caller simply has to enter in the 10-digit phone number. The resulting report will provide the requester with general location information, complaints related to the phone number and additional premium information for a fee.

In addition to NumberInvestiagor.com’s complaint service and aggregation feature, the site also houses several tips and resources, including a link to the Do Not Call Registry.

Unlike many reverse phone lookup services, NumberInvestigator.com is one of the few consumer advocate sites that allows consumers to report phone number complaints to organizations that have the ability to take action. Number Investigator gives consumers power to report potential fraud and band together to take action to eliminate these intrusive phone calls.

About

Numberinvestigator.com is a leading provider of reverse phone lookup services that enable consumers to simply search a number, including cell numbers (where available), landline numbers and VoIP to accurately find the owner of that number.

ReversePhoneDirectory.com Provides Resource to Protect Consumers from Falling Victim to Newest Phone Scam: Vishing

Bellevue, WA (PRWEB) April 27, 2011

ReversePhoneDirectory.com, a leading resource in reverse phone lookup and public records, issues a warning to the public about the latest invasion of privacy that intends to separate people from their hard-earned money, vishing. Vishing is an update to phishing. Phishing is an electronic communication that masquerades as a trustworthy company in an order to persuade the victim to give up financial information. Vishing is an attempt to acquire sensitive personal information through phone calls by pretending to be a trusted financial institution using automated voice-dialing machines. The term is a combination of voice and phishing.

Vishing is can be low cost and typically used to steal credit card numbers, birth dates, PIN numbers, and even CVV codes. The criminal configures the automated dialer to call phone numbers of potential victims. The list is most likely obtained through stealing from a financial institution. When the victim answers the call it is most likely an automated recording generated from a text to speech synthesizer. The call will alert the customer that their credit card or bank account has had fraudulent activity. The message tells the customer to call a phone number, often the same number shown in the caller ID. The number the victim calls tells them to enter their credit card or bank account number. Once this is done the criminal has the necessary information to use the account.

These schemers can be deceiving. Credible sounding automated machines answer toll-free numbers and lure customers into giving financial information by asking that the victim “confirm” such intimate information as ATM Card PIN, SSN, e-mail addresses, and even CVV codes. In many cases this information is used to create duplicate credit and debit cards. Some cases have even been recorded in which a victim’s information was obtained, made into a credit card, and used halfway around the world within 30 minutes.

ReversePhoneDirectory.com advises consumers to be wary of any suspicious phone calls asking for personal information. Any unsolicited phone calls should be looked up on ReversePhoneDirectory.com. Simply enter the 10-digit number. ReversePhoneDirectory.com provides reverse phone lookup services that enable consumers to simply search a number, including cell numbers (where available), landline numbers and VoIP to accurately find the owner of that number. ReversePhoneDirectory.com is a valuable resource that protects the public from being a victim of the scam that preys on people’s trust of financial institutions.

About ReversePhoneDirectory.com

Reverse Phone Directory provides access to reverse phone lookup online. In addition to phone number information, ReversePhoneDirectory.com has search portals for public records services and provides access to the most current information. ReversePhoneDirectory.com is dedicated to using the most technologically advanced searches and believes that the public is entitled to information.

The Billion Dollar Transition From Fitness To Health

Cambridge, UK (PRWEB) October 2, 2008

The market for wireless based healthcare technology is likely to remain relatively buoyant during any economic downtown. However, vendors must still take care when choosing an appropriate business model and deciding on which wireless platform to base their product or service. This is one conclusion of a report published by Cambridge UK based analysts, Wireless Healthcare.

The report, “Wireless Healthcare 2008″, examines a number of companies that have successfully deployed wireless based healthcare services using various business models and technology platforms.

Vendor profiles in Wireless Healthcare 2008 highlight a number of factors influencing the choice of business models. The report notes that while care for the elderly is an important driver it is a mistake to focus exclusively on one demographic group. According to Peter Kruger, Principle Analyst with Wireless Healthcare, “An increasing number of young and middle aged people are taking an interest in fitness. This has created a multi billion dollar market for devices used to monitor physical performance and seen the development of technology platforms that could also be used to monitor health”.

The report lists a range of wireless standards, such as 802.11, Bluetooth and ZigBee, on offer to vendors and describes software platforms that have been customised for use within the medical sector. According to Wireless Healthcare some vendors’ choice of technology is dictated by the partners helping them break into the medical market. The report points to the relationship between Toumaz, the developer of wireless based body monitoring technology, and Oracle, which has its own healthcare database software, as an example of a partnership influencing the choice of a platform.

Kruger explains “Along with other IT companies wireless vendors will suffer as a result of the credit crunch. However, the healthcare sector will also be looking for ways to cut costs and increase the efficiency with which healthcare can be delivered. Wireless has already proven to be a technology that can do this and a number of vendors, in particular those with a high exposure to the consumer electronics market, have repositioned part of their product range as medical or personal healthcare devices”.

“Wireless Healthcare 2008″ is available from http://www.wirelesshealthcare.co.uk

Lookup.com Protects High School Class of 2011 Graduates From Scholarship Scams

Lookup.com People Search

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 25, 2011

Spring is in the air, and most of the upcoming graduates from the class of 2011 have already applied for college. Life is busy for students and parents making post-graduate plans. This is the time of year when scholars are seeking aid with rising college costs, and Lookup.com wants to help protect students from falling prey to the latest scams. Every year students lose money to fraudulent companies wanting to make a buck from college dreams. Lookup.com offers tips and public record search services that protect students and families from losing much needed finances.

Be aware of the following signs of fraud when seeking college scholarships:-

1. Winning a scholarship the student and family have not applied for – Any phone calls, emails or letters proclaiming awards of an unsolicited scholarship are most likely illegitimate. Do not give any information, or return any phone calls.

2. Be Cautious of scholarship search engines that charge a fee – There are many excellent free search engines. Do not pay for scholarship search results. Legitimate scholarships do not keep their information a secret.

3. Be aware of phone numbers – Provided or not, this can be an important detail for detecting scams. If provided, use Lookup.com to search for information on the phone number provided. Lookup.com provides information by simply entering the 10-digit number provided. Be wary of scholarship information that does not provide a phone number, this could be an indication of a fraud.

4. No evidence of past winners – Use Lookup.com to search the scholarship. Most scholarships like to share information and boast of their winners, so if no evidence is found it is likely they are fraudulent. This is not always the case, however, when the scholarship is new.

5. Fake nonprofit status – Just because a name has the word “foundation” in it that does not necessarily make it a nonprofit. Be sure to research the “foundation” granting the scholarship in the Lookup.com search engine.

Lookup.com provides highly relevant, comprehensive search that integrates public data from various information sources and profiles to provide information, allowing users to perform searches using a name, address or phone number. Real-time feeds from ever increasing sources gather information that includes public records, email addresses, and locations.

Many regular search engines crawl the surface of information available and lack the ability to return anything other than basic information. Lookup.com is able to search the deep web, making the site the best source for information search, from a basic address to a background check. Lookup.com provides a reliable source for parents and recent graduates to protect against scholarship fraud.

About

Lookup.com provides a comprehensive people search service the integrates people and people related data such as public records, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, property records and more to enable advanced searches in one place. Visit our company blog to know more.
